Climbing up to Orvieto along the old medieval road
From the railway station (124 m) we quickly cross the crossroads and climb about 100 m up the Le Piagge path, an ancient footpath and pack-animal access to Orvieto. When we reach the walls of the impressive Albornoz fortress, we cross the Anello della Rupe, a footpath that in 1.3 km runs along the base of the entire cliff of Orvieto. Due to the time of day and the warm season, we will choose to walk part of the ring northwards, first downhill and then uphill through a shady chestnut wood, before reaching the asphalt road that leads to the city, which we will carefully cross and continue along the Anello Rupe up and down until we reach Porta Vivaria, where we will enter the city. The gate, also known as the Scenditoio, was one of the best defended in the medieval town. Together with other city entrances, the gate was renovated at the time of Clement VII’s arrival in Orvieto (the Pope arrived in Orvieto on 16 December 1527 to escape from the Sack of Rome). After crossing Piazza del Popolo and reaching Torre del Moro (315 m), (there is the possibility of climbing to the top of the tower with a ticket to admire the whole city from above), we continue to Piazza Duomo, from where we will walk down to Piazza Cahen and to the place where the concert will be held, Church of Santo Stefano. The return trip to the station will be by foot (20′) through Porta Rocca and Le Piagge or by funicular (5′) from Piazza Cahen.

The Goldberg Variations represent both the peak of Bach’s instrumental writing and the emblem of the spiritual dimension reached by the german composer through his high magisterial arithmetic control of the heavenly spheres. Structured in 32 pieces (an Aria, thirty variations and the Aria da capo) with a length of 16 or 32 bars (only the 16th – French-style Overture – is 16+32), they present a canon each third variation: voices following each other and growing in distance, drawing a harmonic bow that finds its peak at the centre and returns to its state of balance only at the end. A marvelous game of proportions and harmonic architecture, the Goldberg Variations reveal the poetic relationship between music and mathematics. A fertile theme, transverse to every era, which today comes back to life in a composer like Andrea Agostini, who makes research on the pure digital signal – managed by complex and harmonic algorithms – his stylistic signature. We present his electronic (acousmatic) miniatures as simple episodes that live in the time of the Goldbergs. Bach’s masterpiece is in effect a period to be experienced and lived with one’s own voice, whether that of harpsichord, piano or – as in this case – the accordeon, whose sound (reminiscent of pure oscillators and sinusoids) is linked to Agostini’s digital signals.
